Comfy Cozy Cotton and Ice Cream. How can you lose?

I am trying to organize my yarn tests by fiber and group a few types of yarns together for efficiency. I bought a few skeins of Ice Cream Cotton Blend and Comfy Cotton Blend and they sat in the bottom of my drawer…for months! The colors I selected felt uninspiring-which is more my issue than the yarn’s. Sometimes that happens in this project because I force myself to get something I would never naturally select. But this is where the fun comes in because LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL WEAVE!!!

So here’s the scoop (harhar). The Ice Cream (yellow) is labeled as a 4, the Comfy (green/blue) as a 3. But they Comfy is actually a larger yarn (though they are very similar). I decided on a 10 dent heddle, but they would work with a 7.5/8 for a more even weave (You can see how my 12 end/12 pick areas are rectangles and not squares). This was an easy weave, easy to warp, fast on the loom and I loved the tweedy result of all these colors with the off white cotton connecting them.

And of course, as I love to do- I HAD to dye it with fiber reactive dyes. I love cotton blends for this- the white cotton will dye but the acrylic stays the same. Maybe I will do a tutorial sometime. I sewed it into a cute poncho for my kid. She calls it her “gazpacho”.

The other thing about this yarn is that the cotton will shrink a bit tightening up your weaving. This was already a close weave, but after washing and tumble drying on hot the cloth was firm enough to cut up and sew. I can totally see these yarns being transformed into a jacket or skirt. Another bonus? The laundered product was soft and pill free.

Okay! Ready for the low down?

Pros: Cheap, easy to work with, dyeable (cotton strands only), lovely colors, easy care.

Cons: A few knots in the skeins, but nothing terrible, the yarn size labeling seemed inaccurate- I think these are both size 3 yarns- the Ice Cream Cotton Blend doesn’t feel like a size 4.

Recommended Heddle Size: 10 for a firmer, cloth like weave, 7.5/8 for something more open and loose.. It seems the Comfy Cotton will track in the 7.5 size as well from examples of weaving I have seen online.

Recommended uses: Blankets, Pillows, Outer Wear Fabric, Scarves and Shawls.

Good for Warp- Yes!

The above project required two of each skien (4 total) with quite a bit left over for another project. Woven on a 24” loom.
